Waive Your School's Insurance

Welcome to the Waive Your School’s Insurance Center!

This page is for those students who wish to opt-out (waive) out of the coverage under their school’s student insurance plan. The school’s student insurance plan can only be waived if the student has coverage under another acceptable insurance plan.

The first step to waive out of your school’s student insurance coverage is to verify that you are an eligible student.


2022-2023 Waiver Information

Hard Waiver Student Eligibility

  • All enrolled students registered for 6 or more credit hours
  • All PhD and EdD students with one or more credits
  • All international students with one or more credit hours

Are required to purchase this plan unless proof of comparable coverage is furnished.

Students must actively attend classes for at least the first 31 days after the date for which coverage is purchased. Home study, correspondence and online courses do not fulfill the Eligibility requirements that the student actively attend classes.

Eligible students who do enroll may also insure their Dependents.

Waiver Deadlines:

  • Annual Waiver Deadline: 9/19/22 – Closed
  • Spring/Summer Waiver Deadline: 1/24/23 (For new incoming students only) 
  • Summer Waiver Deadline: 5/30/23 (For new incoming students only)

Please note, you will need your student ID and your date of birth to login to complete your waiver.

To enter your Student ID #: 

Legacy Saint Joseph’s University Students – Drop the “1” and the “0” of your ID # and replace with the first initial of your first name and the first initial of your last name, followed by remaining digits of your ID #.

New Incoming Saint Joseph’s University Hawk Hill Student ID#s – first initial of your first name and the first initial of your last name, followed by the “10” with remaining digits of your ID #.

Saint Joseph’s University UC (University City) Campus Student ID#s – first initial of your first name and the first initial of your last name with “20” and the remaining digits of your ID#

Submission of a waiver form is not an automatic approval for an insurance waiver. Please check your SJU email on the 5th business day after submitting your waiver form to verify your waiver status has been approved or declined. If you have been requested to submit additional information, please submit within 5 business days. You may contact for any additional questions.  Please include the name of your school, first and last name, and your student ID number on your documents or emails.

Due to HIPAA regulations the student will need to contact us directly as we will not be able to provide any personal information to anyone other than the student.

After you verify that you are a hard waiver student and have other insurance you will need:

  • Your current health insurance plan ID card,
  • Your health insurance brochure or plan description
    • If you are a dependent on the policy you may need assistance from the policy holder to answer some of the questions.

Once you have completed the waiver form, an email will automatically be sent to the email address you provided notifying you of the waiver request decision. If you receive a:

  • Pending e-mail- Your waiver is pending. Once verification of coverage has been completed, you will be notified to your school e-mail, if your waiver has been approved or denied.
  • Approval e-mail– Your waiver was approved. You should print this e-mail and save it with your records.
  • Denial e-mail– Your waiver was denied. If you would like us to look this over or if you answered a question incorrectly, please contact us.

Please Note:
  If you waive the insurance, you will not be eligible to enroll until the following school year, unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event.


For those students who do not submit an approved waiver form before the deadline, you will be automatically charged and officially enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Once enrolled there are no refunds or cancellations. (Please note, automatic enrollment will occur AFTER the waiver deadline.)

Students are required to maintain active insurance coverage that complies with all University requirements for the entire academic year.  The University reserves the right to audit all waivers at any time in order to ensure compliance with the waiver requirements.  Students are responsible for reporting any changes to their health insurance coverage to First Risk Advisors.  

Open Enrollment Periods

Open Enrollment Periods for all Dependents and Students: If you have eligible dependents in the Fall or are a student in the Fall semester and eligible to purchase coverage and you choose not to enroll for coverage before the Annual Enrollment Deadline is *September 19, 2022, you or your dependents will not be eligible to enroll again until the start of next Fall unless you experience a “Qualifying Life Event” during the year.

*For new dependents or new or renewing students in the Spring semester, your open enrollment deadline is January 24, 2023.

*For new dependents or new or renewing students in the Summer semester, your open enrollment deadline is May 30, 2023.

Qualifying Life Event

Qualifying Life Events include:

  • Acquiring a new family member
  • Marriage/Civil Union
  • Divorce
  • Loss or change of Job
  • Expiration of Benefits

If you and/or your dependents meet the requirements for a Qualifying Life Event, you will need to provide the following:

  • Proof of qualifying life event/proof of involuntary loss of coverage
  • Enrollment Form
  • Payment


All documents and payment must be received within 30 days of the qualifying life event. After 30 days, the student or dependents will no longer be eligible to enroll in the plan, until fall of the following school year.
