Undergraduate Student Eligibility
All Domestic Undergraduate students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours are required to purchase this insurance plan unless proof of comparable coverage is furnished.
For those students who do not submit an approved waiver form before the deadline, you will be automatically charged and officially enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan. Once enrolled there are no refunds or cancellations. (Please note, automatic enrollment will occur AFTER the waiver deadline.)
TO ENROLL in the Student Health Insurance Plan (you want to sign up for the school insurance plan):
Enrollment Deadlines:
- Annual Enrollment Deadline: 9/15/21
- Spring/Summer Enrollment Deadline: 2/15/22
If you want to purchase the Student Health Insurance Plan, you can actively enroll yourself during the open enrollment period. This way you will have access to your insurance card soon as you enroll (coverage begins 8/1/21 and ends 7/31/22). You will need to enroll to activate the plan.
If you wait to be automatically enrolled, you will not have access to your insurance card until after the open enrollment/waiver period closes.
Waive Coverage (Opt Out of Coverage)
To WAIVE (you DO NOT want the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) because you have your own insurance):
Waiver Period Deadlines:
- Annual Waiver Deadline: 9/15/21
- Spring/Summer Waiver Deadline: 2/15/22
After you verify that you are a hard waiver student and have other insurance you will need the following to waive:
- Your Maryland UID number NOT the Directory ID number
- Your current health insurance plan ID card. You will need to upload your insurance ID Card to submit a waiver.
- Your health insurance brochure or plan description (or you might want mom & dad’s phone number handy to help answer some of the waiver questions). There might be a few questions about your current plan.
- Remember to click the Submit button after entering your insurance information to complete the waiver process.
Once you have completed the waiver form, an email will automatically be sent to the email address you provided notifying you of the waiver request decision. If you receive a:
- Pending e-mail– Your waiver request has not been accepted; it is in a pending status. Your waiver is pending. Once verification of coverage has been completed, you will be notified by e-mail, if your waiver has been approved or denied.
- Approval e-mail– Your waiver was approved. You should print this e-mail and save it with your records.
- Denial e-mail– Your waiver was denied. If you would like us to look this over or if you answered a question incorrectly, please contact us.
Eligible students who do enroll may also insure their dependents.
Enrollment Deadlines:
- Annual Enrollment Deadline: 9/15/21
- Spring/Summer Enrollment Deadline: 2/15/22
To enroll your dependent into coverage, you will enroll them at the same time as yourself online.
Students who did not enroll themselves or their dependent(s) during the open enrollment period may be able to enroll in the policy if they experience a Qualifying Life Event.
Qualifying Life Events include:
- Acquiring a new family member
- Marriage/Civil Union
- Divorce
- Loss or change of Job
- Expiration of Benefits
If you and/or your dependents meet the requirements for a Qualifying Life Event, you will need to provide the following:
